Word's default settings for text alignment, line spacing, tab settings and margins can greatly affect the look of your documents.

In this course, we will use a document called Luxury Hotels to learn how to enhance documents by adjusting these settings.

Margins are simply the blank areas between the text and the edge of the paper.

They are easy to identify on the ruler, which changes from white where the text will be placed to blue where the boundaries are.

Let's display the ruler.

You can adjust the margins by simply dragging the margin boundaries along the ruler.

You can also set the size of the margins in the Page Layout tab.

To remove the ruler you simply click the button again, for the purposes of this course we shall leave it on show.

Let's move the right margin boundary in to the 14 mark.

This will increase the width of the margin and decrease the area set aside for the text.

The text has been adjusted to the new margin. It does not go all of the way to the 14 mark because of the word wrap facility, which pushes words that will not fit at the end of one line to the next line.

Unless your document is divided into sections all of the text is adjusted to the new margin.

Let's confirm this by moving to the next page in our document.

The text on this page has also reset.

You can use the ruler to change the left margin in exactly the same way as we have just changed the right margin.

The Page Setup command in the Page Layout tab provides an alternative way to change your page margins.

The actual width of the top, bottom, left and right margins are now displayed on the Margins tab.

The left and right margins should really be the same so that the text appears balanced on the page.

Let's set them both to 4, starting with the Left box.

Let's enter the left margin value and then press the Tab key to move on to the Right margin box.

Soft and Hard page breaks are simply the places where one page ends and another begins.

Word automatically inserts Soft page breaks when the text reaches the bottom of the page.

You insert Hard page breaks at any point in the text where you want a new page to start.

We are currently between pages one and two in our document.

In Print Layout View a Soft page break is graphically represented by the white page ending and then a gap before a new page begins.

Word automatically inserts Soft page breaks based on the page margins.

Any text that is added or deleted can push other paragraphs onto different pages.

If you use the current Soft page break, the heading will be printed at the bottom of one page and its content will be printed at the top of the next.

Let's rectify this now, by inserting a Hard page break.

Hard page breaks tell Word exactly where you want to end one page and begin another.

Inserting a Hard page break directly in front of our heading will push the heading to the top of the next page.

You insert a Hard page break by either selecting the Page Break command from the Insert tab or by holding down the Ctrl key and pressing the Enter key.

With the Hard page break inserted, the heading now appears with its content at the top of the next page.

Hard page breaks can be easily removed from your documents by positioning the cursor after the Hard page break at the top of the next page and then pressing the Backspace key.

Let's leave the text as it is and move to the bottom of the document using the Shortcut keys.
